The Black Dog Haltermate is a head halter we recommend when helping a dog learn to walk on a loose lead. Its figure-eight design sits around the dog’s neck and muzzle, with the lead attaching behind the head.
The noseband responds to tension on the lead and relaxes when that tension is released. As with any training tool, the fit and the way you introduce it to your dog matter.
Use a soft tape measure to check your dog’s neck. Measure high on the neck, behind the ears, then compare the measurement with these size ranges:

The ranges overlap, so the measurement is a starting point. Check that the Haltermate fits your dog’s head and muzzle properly before using it on a walk.
Let your dog sniff the Haltermate first. Reward them for putting their nose near it, then build up to wearing it for short periods. Take your time, especially if your dog has never worn a head halter before.
Fit the neck strap snugly, high behind the ears. Follow the fitting instructions for the noseband and check that it sits clear of your dog’s eyes. Use gentle lead handling and reward your dog when they walk with you.
When introducing a halter, we recommend using a Double Ended Dog Lead. Attach one end to the Haltermate and the other to your dog’s collar for a separate collar connection.
Use the Haltermate for supervised walks. Do not jerk the lead or use the halter to tether your dog. Check the fit regularly and take it off if your dog becomes distressed or uncomfortable.
