Planning your next getaway? If you’re anything like us, it’s just not a proper holiday unless the dog comes too! 🐶🌴
With nearly 70% of Aussie households now sharing life with a pet, it’s no surprise more families are shaping their travel plans around their dogs. From beaches to bush retreats, wineries to weekend cafés, more destinations than ever are opening their doors to paws on the ground.
Recent travel data shows a surge in Aussies searching for “pet-friendly accommodation” and “dog-friendly restaurants” — and it’s easy to see why. Including your dog in your adventures not only strengthens your bond, but gives them the mental stimulation, enrichment, and companionship they thrive on.

🧳 Travelling With Dogs: What to Keep in Mind
Bringing your dog on holiday can be an amazing experience — but a little preparation goes a long way. Here’s a quick guide to help you set them (and yourself) up for success:
✅ Safety First
Use a properly fitted car harness, seatbelt attachment or crate. Sudden braking or swerving can be dangerous if your dog is unrestrained.

✅ Pack for Your Dog Too
Bring food, water, bowls, any medications, leads, ID tags, bedding, and a couple of comfort items like toys or a favourite blanket. Don’t forget poo bags and cleaning supplies, just in case!
✅ Plan Your Stops
If you’re road-tripping, schedule breaks every 2 hours for toilet time, sniffing, and stretching legs. Sniff walks in new environments are great decompression opportunities.
👉 Why decompression walks matter
✅ Check Vaccinations and Parasite Protection
If you’re heading to areas with ticks, fleas, or other pests, speak to your vet about protection. Make sure your dog’s vaccinations are up to date too.
✅ Double Check the Accommodation Rules
Just because somewhere says “pet-friendly” doesn’t always mean “all dogs welcome”. Confirm size limits, indoor access, leash rules, and whether dogs can be left alone.
✅ Work on Travel Manners
Dogs can get overstimulated or anxious in new places. If your dog struggles with recall, jumping on guests, or barking in accommodation, some pre-holiday training can make the whole experience easier for everyone.

🌿 Is Your Dog Actually Enjoying the Trip?
It’s important to remember that not all dogs love travel. Some get motion sick, stressed by new smells and sounds, or unsettled when away from home. Watch for signs like panting, pacing, whining or clinging.
For some dogs, staying with a trusted sitter or boarding facility may be the kinder option — and that’s okay.
