Don’t Leave Home Without Them

Apart from being the responsible thing to do, carrying poo bags when you’re out with your dog may also be a legal requirement.

Many councils require the person responsible for a dog in a public place to have an appropriate means of picking up and disposing of their dog’s waste. Depending on the council, this can mean having at least one suitable bag available for each dog you’re walking.

There can also be hefty fines for failing to comply with local requirements. Importantly, in some council areas you don’t necessarily have to wait until your dog has done its business to be in trouble. Failing to carry an appropriate means of collecting your dog’s waste can itself be an offence.

Local laws and penalties do vary between councils, so dog owners should check the requirements that apply in their own area.

But It’s About More Than the Law

For us, this is the more important part.

Whether your council requires you to carry a poo bag or not, picking up after your dog is simply the right thing to do.

We all share our footpaths, parks, walking tracks and public spaces. Nobody wants to step in what someone else’s dog has left behind, and leaving dog waste on the ground isn’t fair on other dog owners, families or the wider community.

Responsible dog ownership doesn’t stop when you leave your front gate.

When your dog stops for the inevitable, pick it up, bag it and put it in the bin.

One Bag Per Dog? We’d Carry More

Even where the local requirement is to have at least one suitable bag available, our recommendation is simple:

Always carry more poo bags than you think you’re going to need.

Dogs don’t always stop at one!

Keeping a whole roll with you means you’re prepared for the second or third stop, a bag that tears, or even helping out another dog owner who’s been caught short.

It’s a small thing, but it’s part of being a considerate and responsible dog owner.
