Understanding Your Dog’s Age in Human Years

Understanding your dog’s age in human years and how their size significantly affects this age conversion.

The Common Misconception and The Reality:

The belief that one dog year equates to seven human years simplifies the complex process of canine ageing. Dogs, much like humans, age at different rates, and size is a major factor in this.

Size-Specific Age Conversion Charts:

Here are different charts for small, medium, and large dog breeds, serving as general guidelines.

Small Breeds (up to approximately 9 kg):

  • 1 Dog Year = 15 Human Years
  • 2 Dog Years = 24 Human Years
  • Beyond that, add approximately 4 human years for each additional dog year.

Medium Breeds (around 10-22 kg):

  • 1 Dog Year = 15 Human Years
  • 2 Dog Years = 24 Human Years
  • Beyond that, add approximately 5 human years for each additional dog year.

Large Breeds (more than 22 kg):

  • 1 Dog Year = 15 Human Years
  • 2 Dog Years = 24 Human Years
  • Beyond that, add approximately 6 human years for each additional dog year.

Caring for Dogs at Different Life Stages:

Dogs of all sizes need care that’s specific to their life stage, from playful puppies to serene senior dogs.

Important Note:

As always, we highly recommend you talk to your dog’s vet directly for any health-related issues. Our guidelines provide a general understanding, but your vet can offer advice tailored to your dog’s specific health needs.

Recognising how size influences a dog’s age in human years is crucial for their care. Whether you have a small or large breed, understanding their life stage is key in providing the best possible care.
